What You'll Actually Need For Breast Cancer Surgery

A diagnosis throws so much at you at once — appointments, decisions, treatment plans — that the practical, everyday stuff can get lost in the noise.

Getting organised before surgery can make recovery so much smoother, both physically and emotionally. Here's a round-up of what's genuinely useful to gather together beforehand.

Before You Go In: Things To Sort At Home

  • Your sleep set-up. Many women find it more comfortable to sleep propped up or in a recliner for the first week or two, so think about extra pillows or a wedge cushion before you need it, not after.
  • Contact numbers for your breast care nurse and ward, written down somewhere obvious — for any questions about recovery or drains.
  • Meals in the freezer. Meals in the freezer. Meals in the freezer. Batch-cook and freeze a few easy dinners, and get a grocery shop in, so the first week home is one less thing to think about.
  • Childcare plans, if needed, for the first few days.
  • Loose, front-opening clothing that won't catch on drains or dressings.
  • Compression socks — check with your hospital whether these are provided, or whether you need your own.
  • A lift to and from hospital organised in advance.

What To Pack In Your Hospital Bag

  • Wash bag with toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, face wipes, soap)
  • Clean underwear
  • Nightwear that opens easily at the front
  • Dressing gown and slippers (you'll likely walk to theatre, so avoid flip-flops — you may be in surgical stockings)
  • A book, magazine, or downloaded film for the in-between hours
  • Phone and charger
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Notepad and pen for jotting down what the nurses tell you
  • A towel
  • A proper post-surgery bra — soft, supportive, and designed not to dig into healing scars (more on this below)
  • A small cushion to protect your chest from the seatbelt on the way home
  • Something comfortable and easy to put on for the journey home — zip-up tops, jogging bottoms, slip-on shoes

For Node Clearance or Mastectomy Specifically

  • One or two bags to carry surgical drains, depending on whether one or both sides are affected
  • A small, soft cushion to tuck under your arm
  • Small pillows for under your arms at night
  • Flannels or sponges (showering can be tricky around dressings and drains)
  • Clothing that allows for drains and tubes coming from the armpit or chest

Don't Forget

Take details of any prescription medication with you to hand to the nursing team, and have a small wash-bag-style pouch ready for the drains so they're easy to carry once you're moving around.

The One Thing Worth Getting Right: Your Post-Surgery Bra

Of everything on this list, the bra is one item that genuinely changes how comfortable recovery feels day to day.

A normal bra — wires, tight elastic, fiddly back clasps — is the last thing your body wants anywhere near healing scars and drains.

This is exactly the gap H.E.R Bodywear was built to fill.

Founded by a two-time breast cancer survivor, their HERO bra is designed specifically for post-mastectomy, lumpectomy and reconstruction recovery:

  • Seamless construction so there's nothing to irritate sensitive skin
  • A front zip for one-handed dressing
  • Removable moulded cups that can hold a prosthesis if needed
  • No wires
  • Soft, adjustable support that goes on easily and stays comfortable all day and night

Every recovery looks a little different, and your breast care team is always your best source of guidance on what you specifically will need.

But having the practical things sorted in advance means you can spend your energy on healing — not hunting for a charger or the right cushion at 11pm.
