The Three Phases of the Growth Cycle
Every lash and brow hair cycles through three distinct phases. At any given moment, different hairs are in different phases. Which is why you don’t lose them all at once, and why a serum needs time to show results.
PHASE ONE
Anagen — Active Growth
Duration: 30–45 days for lashes · Up to 6 months for brows
During Anagen, the hair follicle is actively connected to the dermal papilla — the tiny structure at its base that delivers nutrients via your blood supply. Cells in the hair bulb are dividing rapidly, and the lash or brow is physically growing. Around 35–40% of your lashes are in this phase at any one time.
This is when the follicle is most receptive to nourishing actives. Peptides, botanicals, and conditioning agents can genuinely reach the site where growth happens — which is exactly why a well-formulated serum can make a real difference.
PHASE TWO
Catagen — Transition
Duration: 2–3 weeks
Growth stops. The follicle detaches from its blood supply and begins to shrink. The lash is still attached and holding its length — it simply isn’t growing further. A new lash is already quietly forming beneath it.
Worth knowing: if a lash is pulled out during Catagen, the follicle may take considerably longer to restart — and repeated trauma can permanently damage it.
PHASE THREE
Telogen — Rest & Renewal
Duration: 3–4 months
The resting phase. The old lash sits dormant while the new hair forming beneath it matures. Eventually the old lash sheds naturally — that lash on your cheek. Around 50% of lashes are resting in Telogen at any one time, which is why the full cycle can take anywhere from 90 days to almost a year.
